Asheville Gallery Of Art

In November 2024, I joined the Asheville Gallery of Art, a cooperative of 30 local artists who own and operate a beautiful space in downtown Asheville. In February 2025, two fellow artists will join me in mounting an exhibit called “How We Heal,” celebrating the resiliency of our community after Hurricane Helene. My pieces focus on salvage: repurposing old work to reimagine a more co-operative relationship with nature and a more generous approach to art-making.

"Elegy in Blue and Orange" 2025 - Oil on canvas 30 x 24

This was originally a picture of the lowlands of eastern NC in high summer. I made the mood more somber, added clumps of tupelo trees to frame a setting sun, and watched it become an elegy.

"Final Reflections" 2024 - Oil on canvas 24 x 24

The sun again becomes the focal point, lighting reeds aflame as it sets behind the treeline.

"Out of the Shadows" 2024 - Oil on canvas 24 x 24

Viewers are invited out of the shadows of riverbank reeds into the golden meadows of mountain foothills.

"Sentinel" 2025 -Oil on canvas 30 x 24

Originally a summer scene of Ravenal Lake in the NC Highlands, this was reworked into a tribute to a solitary oak which survived the hurricane.

"Once and Future Blue Ridge" 2024 -Oil on canvas 24 x 24

This is how I remember the Pisgah National Forest before Helene- and how I believe it will look again.

"Bill's Place" 2025 - Oil on canvas 30 x 24

Artist Bill Jameson taught a workshop in Saluda last year, generously sharing images of some of his favorite sites for plein air painting. This canvas was started in that workshop, then languished for several months before I extensively reworked it.

"Ballad for Asheville" 2024 - Pastel on board 12 x 9

Within days of Hurricane Helene, buskers returned to share the sidewalks of Asheville with rescue workers and National Guard members. We are grateful to all who came to help.

"BFF's" 2024 - Pastel on board 12 x 9

While we didn’t get enough snow in Asheville to build a snowman, my imagination borrowed some from New Orleans.

"Memory of Blowing Rock" 2025 - Oil on canvas 18 x 24

One of the magical aspects of the Blue Ridge mountains is the early morning mist, making hilltops resemble islands in the sea.
